Marilyn Monroe once said, "Sometimes things fall apart so better things can fall together."

This is a universal truth for all areas of your life, but even more so when you've experienced a breakup. When we say breakup, we mean all kinds of relationship loss. It could be breaking up with a partner, undergoing a separation or divorce, or a partner passing away.

No matter what kind of breakup you experience, it hurts. You could feel lost, unworthy of love, or as if you are losing control of your life. But, after a while, you start taking back control and feeling better about yourself.

This was exactly what a group of researchers in Germany wanted to explore: How perceived control of one's life changes right after a breakup and in subsequent years. The study observed more than 1,000 participants over a period of three years to see how their sense of control improved as time passed.

It's important because the researchers have already found that perceived control changes over time. That means you're altering your thinking about yourself. It also means you can change other beliefs about yourself—that's powerful!

In today's article, we discuss the results of this study. We also consider how this affects other areas of your life and, more specifically, your self-beliefs. Plus, we give you the tools to change your belief system.
