Texas officials found a catastrophic scene where dozens of migrants smuggled across the border from Mexico to the U.S. were either dead or severely weakened in an abandoned tractor-trailer. The Jan. 6 committee will hold a surprise hearing today. Two deadly Amtrak collisions occurred just a day apart. 46 dead, 16 hospitalized after abandoned trailer found in Texas, officials say

Anyone alive was too weak to help themselves out of a tractor-trailer Monday that was found abandoned in a remote area of San Antonio amid soaring temperatures in Texas, officials said. Forty-six people were found dead and 16 others were taken to hospitals, including 12 adults and four children. None of those who died were children, officials said. The investigation has been turned over to federal authorities. San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the deaths were "nothing short of a horrific human tragedy."  Read more

A surprise Jan. 6 committee hearing

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol will hold an unexpected hearing today. In a Monday announcement, the committee said it would present "recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony," but offered few details about the nature of the evidence or who will testify. Hearings for the month of June were originally supposed to conclude last week, when the panel focused on former President Donald Trump's attempts to pressure the Department of Justice to investigate unsubstantiated claims of election fraud. Tuesday's hearing is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET. Two deadly Amtrak collisions, one day apart

At least three people were killed and dozens more injured after several cars of Amtrak's Southwest Chief train came off the tracks after colliding with a dump truck Monday in Mendon, Missouri. The train was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago with 243 passengers aboard when crash occurred at am "uncontrolled intersection" on a gravel road without lights or electronic controls, officials said. The deadly incident came hours after three people were killed Sunday when an Amtrak commuter train smashed into a car in Northern California. Read more

Democrats and Republicans are voting in the states of New York, Colorado, Illinois, Oklahoma and Utah today, with many of the races featuring incumbents who are favored to win both the primary and fall general elections. There are local differences in every race: The Republican primary for secretary of state in Colorado features a county clerk under indictment over unsuccessful efforts to find voter fraud in Donald Trump's loss of the 2020 presidential election. Ghislaine Maxwell to be sentenced in sex abuse case

British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell will be sentenced Tuesday morning for aiding the wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse underage girls. Prosecutors said she should serve between 30 years and 55 years in prison, reflecting the federal sentencing guidelines. Maxwell, 60, was convicted in December of sex trafficking and other crimes after a month-long trial that featured testimony from four women who said they were abused in their teens. In their recommendations to the judge who will preside over the sentencing hearing, prosecutors called her crimes "monstrous."  Read more
