  A Detroit Free Press/USA TODAY Network investigation found that the increasing popularity of SUVs is the most likely cause of escalating pedestrian deaths nationwide, which are up 46 percent since 2009. Regulators have known for years that SUVs are more dangerous to pedestrians than other vehicles, yet little has been done to combat or publicize it.
