CONSUMER UPDATE: Mercury Poisoning Linked to Skin Products

Read the consumer update

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cautions you to avoid skin creams, soaps, and lotions that contain mercury because they can have serious health consequences for you or your family.

These products usually are manufactured abroad and sold illegally in the U.S., often in shops catering to Latino, Asian, African, or Middle Eastern communities.

Be especially aware of "anti-aging" or "skin lightening" products that contain "mercurous chloride," "calomel," "mercuric," "mercurio," or "mercury."
