Analysis and opinion for your weekend reading

Well, what a week of news?
We have seen stories about history being made in US politics, a former prime minister's attempt to run for the UN's top job and preparations for the Rio Olympics.

Of all the major news from this week, no story was bigger than the release of footage from inside a juvenile detention centre in the Northern Territory; one that prompted a royal commission.

Let's take a look at some of the long reads that offer up the opinion and analysis to help us make sense of it all.

ANALYSIS: 'THE NT HAS KNOWN ABOUT THE TREATMENT OF JUVENILES FOR YEARS. SO, WHY HAS NOTHING HAPPENED UNTIL NOW?'

ABC reporter Kate Wild has been covering the treatment of children in the NT juvenile justice system for a long time, from the gassing of children to the controversial use of restraint chairs.

She explains why it has taken so long for politicians to take action.

OVER AT RADIO NATIONAL THE MINEFIELD ASKS: 'IS THERE SOMETHING FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG WITH DETENTION?'

Waleed Aly asks:

"It's interesting how you heard in some of the commentary this week comparisons being drawn between Guantanamo Bay and the footage from the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.

...

"As we discard people from our own imagination by having them detained, it's as though they're no longer people."

Aly is joined by Scott Stephens and Martha Nussbaum. Read the full conversation here.

BRUCE WOPLE: THE REDEMPTION OF HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON

Wople writes:

"As Hillary Clinton made history this week to become the first woman to be nominated by a major political party for the US presidency, her party had two overriding objectives: to unite Democrats behind her, and to rebuild, renew and re-present her identity and character so that her unfavourables could begin to be reversed."

The Clinton campaign knows how to fix problems.

YOU MIGHT HAVE CLOCKED KEVIN RUDD'S BID TO RUN FOR THE UN'S TOP JOB ...

Annabel Crabb writes:

"In what other hominid beats a heart so uniquely attuned to the impenetrable snowdrifts of the UN's famous bureaucracy?

"Who else can you think of who not only speaks fluent UN diplo-jargon, but loves it?

"But for the third time now, Kevin Rudd has lost his dream job thanks to fat mortal fingers. It can't feel good.
