Election 2016: Only one more day to go!

Australia Votes 2016
Turnbull warns against independents and both leaders shy away from 'what ifs'
Good afternoon,

Well, we're nearly there. We've talked a lot about how long this election campaign has been but now we can see the end. We can also hear one clear message from both major parties - "stability".

Here's what happened on the trail today:

1. MALCOLM TURNBULL SPOKE AT THE NATIONAL PRESS CLUB

The PM used the address to warn Australians against voting for independents, saying it could lead to chaos.

"It is a roll of the dice that could well result in Bill Shorten as prime minister, with unions, Greens and independents pulling the strings," Mr Turnbull said.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten had a few things to say about stability too, pointing to divisions in the Coalition over same-sex marriage.

"We know the Liberal Party is not united," he said.

2. THE LEADERS WERE ASKED THE 'WHAT IF' QUESTION

If you're leading a party when it loses an election, what happens to you?

Mr Shorten and Mr Turnbull faced questions over leadership today and both drove home messages of stability within their own parties and chaos across the aisle.

Mr Shorten had this to say:

"We've been more united in the last three years than in about the last 15 to 20 years. So I can submit to the Australian people in terms of leadership. Look at the last three years. By contrast, Mr Turnbull clearly leads a divided party."

Here's Mr Turnbull:

"The only thing my party is focused on is winning every seat we hold and others from the Labor Party. And my message is a vote for Labor, Greens, independent is a vote for a chaotic parliament in disarray."

FROM FACT CHECK: HOW DO THE RECORDS OF LABOR AND THE COALITION COMPARE?

Like this campaign, the ABC's Fact Check unit is in its last week.

It has been checking claims made by politicians and public figures since the lead-up to the last election, seeking to inform the national debate, and the choices of those voters when they head to the ballot box.

So how does the record of our politicians stack up over the campaign, and over Fact Check's entire history?
