For the Record: Trump, Johnson ... who else is in?

Happy Memorial Day, everyone! It's the start of a brand-new week, but one that won't include the once-promised Trump-Sanders debate . We can't even wrap our heads around how it would have played out, mashing up two entirely different political genres. It would have been like watching a Transformers-Caillou crossover episode. Could viewers have made any sense of the proceedings? Would the two candidates have even spoken the same language? So many unanswered questions.

Here's what we did learn over the first two days of the holiday weekend: The Libertarians now have a pair of running mates, and California never had a drought in the first place - it was all a crazy misunderstanding that Donald Trump cleared up for us on Saturday. It's your three-day weekend edition of FTR.

Rubio's fridge is all out of Haterade

Our biggest unanswered question from the nonexistent debate: Would it have really hurt Hillary all that much? Could Sanders supporters watch two solid hours of Trump's "Crazy Bernie" talking points and emerge just as anti-Hillary as before?

Our gut instinct would be to say "no," but Marco Rubio managed to endure months of a full-on Trump onslaught (insults about his stature and his ethics, and a campaign-ending defeat in his home state ) ... and he's all-in for Trump anyway, he told reporters late last week, just as Trump clinched the GOP nomination.

Why the turnaround? "Donald Trump will sign the repeal of Obamacare. (Hillary Clinton) won't," Rubio told reporters. "I want the successor to Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court to be a conservative. I believe that's the kind of judge that he'll appoint, and I know she won't. I want someone that will defend life. I know he will and she won't." So that's yet another founding member of Team #NeverTrump now joining Team #OKFineLetsGoWithTrump.

We got our contested convention

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson was named the Libertarian Party's presidential candidate on the second ballot of this weekend's convention in Orlando, Florida. Joining him on the ticket is former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld as vice president. Compared with the outlandishness of the major parties' campaigns so far this year, the Libertarian Party's nomination process was ... wait, no,  it was weirder than anything the Democrats and Republicans are up to this year.

The party hopes to attract anti-Trump Republicans as well as Bernie supporters if Clinton wins the nomination. But if they're going to do that, they need to work on their hashtag game immediately. #TeamGov sounds like a Model U.N. summer camp hashtag, and  #FeelTheJohnson ... just no. Here's a free one on us: #KeepCalmAndGaryOn. You're welcome.
