ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • It's time to pay attention to the tax debate. The Federal Government is considering allowing the states and territories to charge income tax. Why? To cover growing health and education costs and effectively end the stand-off over funding that's been dragging on since Joe Hockey's 2014 budget. It's a big move and if it happens ABC political reporter Louise Yaxley says it will "be a major change to the way the federation works". It will all be discussed at a Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting starting tonight

  • Some Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) members are walking off the job today. The industrial action was originally planned for the Easter period but was suspended it in the wake of the Brussels attacks. Today, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville and Darwin airports are likely to be affected. There will be stoppages in Melbourne tomorrow

  • The Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence will make its recommendations public this morning. The State Government has already pledged to implement the findings. Fiona McCormack from Domestic Violence Victoria wants the system to tilt so perpetrators feel the social effects of the crime, rather than victims and children

Landline's Pip Courtney clocked up 30 years with the ABC recently. She spoke to Back Story about how at first she "didn't get" journalism but now she knows "it's the best seat in the house"

Here's what's coming up:

  • 10:00am AEDT: A Sydney siege hostage will continue giving evidence at the inquest

  • 11:00am AEDT: The report with findings from the Royal Commission into Family Violence in Victoria will be tabled in State Parliament

  • 12:30pm AEDT: The National Press Club address will hear from several "Women of Science"
