For the Record's week in review: What's a palmetto, anyway?

Happy Saturday, For the Record peeps! We spent much of the night thinking about where state nicknames come from, which led to us googling "palmetto" (which is a "little palm," in case you, like us, were only vaguely aware of what it meant), thanks to last week's and this week's S.C. primaries. We learned that the sabal palmetto is the South Carolina's state tree, that a palmetto bug is basically a cockroach and that there are five U.S. towns called "Palmetto" and none of them are in the Palmetto State. #themoreyouknow

With that, let's recap the big news of the week, which began with South Carolina and will end with South Carolina.

Palmetto State, Part 1, AKA Bye, Jeb

Donald Trump trumped a week ago today in the state, winning the GOP primary with about 10 percent more voters than second and third place finishers Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. It became a day of reckoning for fourth place Jeb Bush, who decided that it was time to face the music. He was not an exclamation point. He was, at best, a comma, simply creating a slight pause in the 2016 GOP primary narrative. And so he dropped out of the race with a speech that made even us feel bad for him. How far we have come since Jeb was the supposed Chosen Nomination One, and so many millions of dollars spent along the way.

Nevada crowns its primary queen and king

Out west, Hillary Clinton showed last Saturday that the Silver State was still Clinton country, triumphing over Bernie Sanders by a little more than 5% in the Democratic caucuses there. Given that she had previously led Sanders by more than 20 points, it wasn't the knockout her campaign once expected, and the #FeelTheBern-ers have made sure to emphasize that. Still, a win is a win, and she's hoping to turn that Nevada luck into something more.

Nevada also handed the Donald his third consecutive win on Tuesday, despite his inability to pronounce the state's name correctly (again, Ne-va-duh, not Ne-vah-duh). The question is no longer whether he's viable; it's whether he can be stopped.

#GOPDebate 10.0

Which brings us to Thursday, when the remaining five Republican candidates got their debate on for the tenth time this election cycle. Rubio and Cruz did their best Bash Brothers impressions to take on front-runner Trump (who, #MakeAmericaGreatAgain hat not withstanding, really does embody Team Iceland of D2: The Mighty Ducks). In other debate news: Ben Carson just wants to play in the attack game, and John Kasich was there. And as usual, there was much to fact check over the course of the night.

The Endorsement

In a move to block Hillary Clinton from winning the general election/secure his spot on the Republican ticket as vice president, Chris Christie endorsed Trump on Friday . Yes, the same Chris Christie who decried Trump's claim that people were celebrating in New Jersey on 9/11. The same Chris Christie who said Trump's call for a ban on Muslims was "dead wrong." The same Chris Christie who called Trump the "entertainer-in-chief." That guy. Guess the past is in the past.

Palmetto State, Part 2

The Dems get their day in South Carolina today. It's probably a lock-in for Clinton, who's averaging a 25-point lead in the state, but as Journey says, don't stop believing, Sanders fans. Here's what to look out for.

And finally, in honor of the Oscars...

Team FTR tried their hands at technology and made a little video to give out our own awards to the candidates (warning: you'll never be able to unsee our choice for candidate doppelganger). Have any other ideas for what you'd like to see us banter about? Send 'em our way.

Until Monday morning,

-- Jessica, Brett and Joanna
